Webby's Tube Filled Name Tag
written by:  Yourwebness

This tutorial was created with Paint Shop Pro 7, but the steps can be adapted to all versions of PSP.

What you need:

  • A tube (medium to large in size)

  • A font (somewhat fat in size, so it shows your fill)

1.  Open a new transparent image in PSP (make it big enough for your name, we will resize later).  For this tut, I am using 600 x 300 (but if your name is long, use 800 x 400 at least!).  You need to allow enough room to use your fat fonts and then to decorate after.

2.  Okay, select a tube that you want to use.  This tube will be used to flood fill your text and to decorate it.

3.  Click on the title bar of the tube (the top portion) to select it.  Press SHIFT and D to duplicate the image.  Do this twice.  You will have 2 copies now.  Close out your original.  (Always work from copies, so as not to mess up your originals)

4.  Select one of your duplicate tubes.  Select a complimentary color to your tube  (either a color from the tube, or something that compliments it).  You can also use a background, gradient, or whatever you like!

5.  Add a new layer to your tube.

6.  Flood fill your new layer with the complimentary color you just selected.

7.  If you want you can add some "pizzazz" to that plain color by using a plug-in on it.  One of my favorites for this is to use FM Paint Engines.  But using a texture from PSP works great too.  Play around with it until you get a look you like.

8.  Click on LAYERS > ARRANGE > SEND TO BOTTOM

9.  Now select the top layer, which is your tube.  I like to add a little drop shadow to the tube.  So click on EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > DROP SHADOW.  These are the settings I have used, however, you can use any setting you like:

10.  Click OK

11.  Your file should look similar to this:

12.  Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE ALL (FLATTEN)

13.  Select your transparent image (mine is 600 x 300).

14.  Click your text tool Find a good "fat" font.  You want to be able to easily see the filled tube inside of the text.

15.  Your text entry box will appear.

Select the "fat font" you have decided on.  Start with size of 48, and work up from there.  Have the font a little smaller than the width of your image that you are placing it on.

16.  Click on the FILL inside the styles box:

17.  The Pattern dialog will pop up

18.  Select the tube with the background we made earlier, by click on the arrow to the right of the pattern shown in the current patter box.  You will most likely need to scroll all the way to the top.

19.  Set your scale % at 30% to start, look at the text, resize this as needed to get the look you want.  Personally I never liked to change the angle, but it is an option if ya want to try it.  Click OK on the Pattern Box, and then OK on the Text Entry Box.

20.  Your text area should now look something like this:

21.  Add a bevel (if ya like) to your text.  Click EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > INNER BEVEL, and these are the setting I have used:

22.  A little drop shadow, I am using the same settings as before (Vertical = 5, Horizontal = 5, Opacity = 71, Blur = 5.9).  Click SELECTIONS > SELECT NONE.

23.  Now take your other copy of your tube (the one WITHOUT the background), and select it.

24.  Click EDIT > COPY

25.  Select your name tag and click EDIT > PASTE > AS NEW LAYER

26.  Now you need to resize your tube more than likely.  Click on IMAGE > RESIZE and select a percentage of the original (I am selecting 50%).  When you find the right size, select OK.

27.  Position the tube on your text, in front of behind, or whatever look you are trying to achieve.

28.  Add a little drop shadow, I am using the same settings as before (Vertical = 5, Horizontal = 5, Opacity = 71, Blur = 5.9).  Click SELECTIONS > SELECT NONE.

29.  You may want to move the tube to the bottom layer, depending on the look you have, try it out and see, you can always undo it.

30.  Once everything is in the positions that you want it, click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE ALL (FLATTEN).

31.  Now your image should look something like this:

32.  Crop your image so you don't have all that extra white space.  This is my finished tag.

33.  You are done!  Add a frame, or a background or whatever ya like!  Oh and this makes a nice background, just mute the tag!  I would love to see your results too!  Send them to me at:
