Webby's Swirled Mosaic Tag Tutorial
written by:  Yourwebness

This tutorial was created with Paint Shop Pro 8, but the steps can be adapted to all versions of PSP.

By special request, I am writing this tutorial.  Thanks to the awesome tubing of a friend, I am writing this tut using work tubed by him.  I am still kind of new at writing tutorials, but I hope you enjoy making this tag!

Items needed for this tut:

  • colorful tube of your choice

Okay, I am going to use the following picture (it is 360 x 351), is is by one of my favorite artists, Kayomi, and the title of the painting is "Cat Nap":

This picture was tubed by a good friend, JJWa1,  of mine who has given me permission to use his work in my tutorial, along with the amazing artist who inspires so many of us, Kayomi!  immy just authorized me to add this awesome tube to my site, he has already received a few requests for this tube!  Thanks Jimmy <kisses>  If you would like this tube, simply click on the screen shot below to download it!  Here is the screenshot of the tube I am using:

1.  Click SHIFT + D to make a duplicate copy of your tube.  Close your original.

2.  Your tube should have plenty of extra space around it.  The one I am working with doesn't have enough, so we need to resize the canvas.  Click on IMAGE > CANVAS SIZE.  The Canvas Size dialog box will appear, and looks like this:

Make your canvas size approximately 100 pixels wider in both height and width.  I rounded mine to a new size of 450 x 450, centering my tube as shown above.

3.  Click SHIFT + D to make a duplicate copy of your tube again. You now have 2 copies, and you closed your original earlier.

4.
Select one of your copied tubes.  Click on EFFECTS > DISTORTION EFFECTS > POLAR COORDINATES.  A box will appear allowing you to select your settings, these are the settings that I have used:

5.  Click OK.  You should now have a tube that looks something like this:

6.  Click ADJUST > SHARPNESS > SHARPEN, your image will now look like this:

The difference is subtle, but look closely at the 2 pictures, you can clearly see the 2nd picture looks much better!

7.  Click SHIFT + D to make a duplicate copy of your tube again.

8.  Click on EFFECTS > TEXTURE EFFECTS > MOSAIC - ANTIQUE.  A box will appear that allows you to select your settings.  These are the settings that I am using:

9.  Click on OK.

10.  You should have 3 different tubes open now:

  • The "unaltered" tube

  • The Mosaic tube

  • The Polar Coordinates tube

11.  Select your mosaic tube.  Click on EDIT > COPY.

12.  Select your Polar Coordinates tube, and select EDIT > PASTE AS A NEW LAYER.  It should look something like this:

13.  Your mosaic layer now needs to be reduced in size so both layers are somewhat visible.  I would suggest either 85% or 75% reduction.  Make sure the mosaic layer is the layer selected.  Click EDIT > RESIZE and then the resize options dialog box will appear:

14.  BEFORE clicking on OK, make sure that "resize all layers" at the bottom is UNCHECKED!  Then click OK.  It should now look something like this:

15.  Click ADJUST > SHARPNESS > SHARPEN, your image will now look like this:

16.  Your mosaic layer should be moved down to the bottom layer.  Click on LAYERS > ARRANGE > MOVE DOWN.  Mine now looks like this:

17.  Okay, now I don't quite like WHERE these two layers are positioned, so I am going to move one (or even both) of them to get a look I like.  Just use your "mover" tool, and position the layer (or layers) as you like.  My "revised" version looks like this:

18.  Now we are ready to add our "unaltered" tube.  Click on it to select it.  Click on EDIT > COPY.

19.  Click on EDIT > PASTE AS A NEW LAYER.  It should look something like this:

20.  This new layer also needs to be reduced in size.  Now since the previous layer I added was done at 85%, I am going to try this one at 75%.  Click EDIT > RESIZE and then the resize options dialog box will appear:

21.  Click ADJUST > SHARPNESS > SHARPEN, your image will now look like this:

22.  Now, you need to reposition this layer like you did the previous layer.  Just play with it a little to find where you want this layer.  Mine looks like this now:

23.  Now
I like the look of some drop shadow.  If you are not big on drop shadow, skip this step, I won't tell!  Click on EFFECTS > 3-D EFFECTS > DROP SHADOW.  I am using the following settings on all 3 layers:

24.  After applying the drop shadow to all 3 layers, my image looks like this:

25.
Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE ALL (FLATTEN) and you are done!  Resize if ya like (but don't forget to sharpen if ya do!!).  Here is my completed tag!

I would love to see your results!  Or if ya have a question or comment about this tut, please e-mail me at this link:  Webby's Swirled Mosaic Tag Tutorial Comments!
