Webby's Quick & Colorful Motion Trail Tag
written by:  Yourwebness

This tutorial was created with Paint Shop Pro 7, but the steps can be adapted to all versions of PSP.

Items needed for this tut:

1.  Open a new transparent image in PSP (make it big enough for your name, we will resize later).  For this tut, I am using 400 x 400 (but if your name is long, use 600 x 600 at least!)

2.  Select a nice script font (I am using Renaissance-Regular.ttf).  Set your type size to 100 and use bold (some fonts won't look right with bold, use your judgment).  But make sure you can easily see the colors.  You can either select white as your text color and flood fill with a nice background image for colors.  But I like the gradients.  I am using a gradient called "rt"
(I have no clue where I found it, by my links page has some gradient links to find something nice).  Select the top box for style and the angle at 90 and repeats at 0 (you can select 1 or 2 if there are less colors, just experiment).  Click OK on your gradients.

3.  Add your name to the text box, your FILL color will be the gradient you selected.  The STROKE will be NULL.

4.  Add you text and click OK.

5.  Now depending on what type of motion trail you want, move your text to the opposite end.  For example if you want a motion trail from the left, move your text to the right.  I personally like the trail that looks like your text swooped up from below or down from above.  For this tut, The text will be swooped from above.  My text is being moved to the bottom center of my transparent image.

6.  Now go to EFFECTS > PLUGINS and select either Eye Candy or Eye Candy 4000 (I am using EC4000).  We are going to use MOTION TRAIL. These are the setting I used:

Click on OK to apply.

7.  Now, open a NEW transparent image, the same size as your original.  Again mine is 400 x 400, so I am doing that again.

8.  Select your text tool, now you want to use the same font, same size, and same gradient, but THIS TIME, select a color in your STROKE box.  Because of the colors of my gradient, I like the way black looks with this.

Click on OK.  This is what my 2nd image looks like:

9.  Now we want to bevel this 2nd image (the one we just did).  Go to EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > INNER BEVEL.  And I used the following settings.

Click OK.  Now this is what my 2nd image looks like after the bevel was applied:

10.  Okay, now select your 2nd image (the one we just beveled) click EDIT > COPY.  Select your 1st image (the one with the motion trail.  Click EDIT > PASTE > AS NEW LAYER.

11.  Now carefully move your pasted text over the original text.  If necessary zoom in slightly (VIEW > ZOOM IN BY 1).  This will enable you to line it up EXACTLY.  This is what you should now have:

12.  Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE VISIBLE

13.  Decorate as you wish!  I added a new layer and then pasted some fairy dust into the selection (the motion trail), and then adjusted the layer blend to 76 to lighten slightly.  This is how mine now looks:

14.  Now BEFORE you decide to crop this image, I would suggest that you Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE ALL (FLATTEN).  This will allow you to see the COMPLETE trail as it fades.  You don't want to cut any of the trail.  Crop as you want it.

15.  Then resize your image, IMAGE > RESIZE.  I brought mine down to 300 x 300.

16.  EFFECTS > SHARPEN > SHARPEN

17.  You are done!  Add a frame, or a background or whatever ya like!  Oh and this makes a nice background, just mute the tag!  I would love to see your results too!  Send them to me at:
