Webby's Layered Blurred Tag Tutorial
written by:  Yourwebness

This tutorial was created with Paint Shop Pro 7, but the steps can be adapted to all versions of PSP.

By special request, I am writing this tutorial.  I am still new at writing tutorials, but I hope you enjoy making this tag!

Items needed for this tut:

Okay, I am going to use the following picture (it is 542 x 369), is is by one of my favorite artists, Kayomi, and the title of the painting is "Golden Pair":

© Copyright 1995 - 2003 Kayomi. All rights reserved worldwide.

1.  Click SHIFT + D to make a duplicate copy of your graphics.  Do this a second time.  You now have your original, and 2 copies.  Close the original.

2.  Resize one of the copies so the longest side (either height or width) is 300.  My image is 542 x 369, so If I change the width to 300, the height will be 204 (that is 55 % of the original size).  Click OK.  Your resized image should look like this:

3.  Click EFFECTS > SHARPEN > SHARPEN, your image will now look like this (after resizing it is best to sharpen!):

The difference is subtle, but look closely at the 2 pictures, you can clearly see the 2nd picture looks much better!  Minimize this image for a moment, we are going to work on our other graphic, which is still full size.

4.  Click on the other graphics (the full size one) to select it.

5.  Select EFFECTS > Fantastic Machines > Paint Engine.  This is what Paint Engine looks like when you pull it up:

That little "pull down menu" should be accessible, if it is "grayed out" your presets are not loaded.  You can download the presets at the link at the top of this e-mail, but they go in the WINDOWS folder.  You will need to close and reopen PSP then.

6.  Okay, now click on that little arrow to the right of the pull down menu, and select "little waves".  Now honestly, I have added alot to my presets from other tuts.  I do not recall if this preset is one of the originals or one that I saved from a tut.  If you don't have "little waves", the preset information is below, just save it.

7.  Then click on APPLY.  Your image should now look like this:

8.  Apply the SAME Paint Engine Filter one more time, your image should look like this:

9.  Okay, now minimize this image.  Return to your original image, (the smaller image).  Select NULL for your FOREGROUND color and an opposite color of your graphic for your BACKGROUND color.  We will be using the magic wand to select this, and we ONLY want to get the border.  I am using purple, since there is no purple in my image (this will NOT remain this color!). Here is what I mean:

10.  Click on IMAGE > ADD BORDER > 5 and make sure that SYMMETRICAL IS CHECKED, then click okay, like shown:

You know have a border around your image that looks like this:

11.  Now select the magic wand and click on your border.  You will have marching ants, and it should look like this:

you can flood fill with the color you want as a border, use Blade pro or whatever you want.  I am going to use Blade Pro, so I will flood fill this purple border with white, so I get the "true" colors from blade pro.  Once you have this border done SELECTIONS > SELECT NONE  Right now mine looks like this:

12.  Now add a border of 20 symmetrical checked, click on your magic wand to select it.  It should look like this:

13.  Click on your Flood Fill tool and then select PATTERN for your foreground style box, and NULL for your background style box.  The pattern you want to select is your LARGE graphic that we "blurred" with Paint Engine, (SCALE: 100%, Angle 0%) like so:

14.  Flood fill your border with the blurred image.  DO NOT DESELECT.  Click on SELECTIONS > INVERT, and your ants should be marching around only your border of 5 we made previously like so:

15.  It is time for some shadow. Click on EFFECTS > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow.  Use the following settings:

Apply drop shadow again, but change the "5" in both Vertical and Horizontal to a "-5".  Selections > Select None.

16.  Repeat steps 10 through 15 twice more (which will give you 3 boarders of 5 and 3 borders of 20).

17.  To "even out the tag" add the border of 5 again, and your tag should look like this:

18.  At this point you can decorate your tag with tubes, or whatever ya like.  I would suggest resizing this (it is 460 x 364 right now!).  I resized to 75% of the original and then make sure to sharpen the image.  Mine looks like this now:

I would love to see your results!  Or if ya have a question or comment about this tut, please e-mail me at this link:  Webby's Layered Blurred Tag Tutorial Comments!
