Webby's Lattice Overlay Name Tag
written by:  Yourwebness

This tutorial was created with Paint Shop Pro 8, but the steps can be adapted to all versions of PSP.

This tutorial happened as  something I "envisioned", yet again!  I had no clue if it would even work, but it did!  Wooohooo!  I have had a large amount of people "demand" more name tag tuts.  I always try to create something new and different.  There are a ton of great tuts out there (I have tried most of them).  But my biggest thing is to be able to offer something unique and different!

Now, I KNOW this tutorial will have an abundance of steps (most of mine do!).  It is time consuming.  I will give ya all the screen shots you need, so any level user can do it.  I was discussing which tube I should use with a friend (thanks, again, Jimmy!)!  And as a result, I decided to make him a tag as a thank-you for his help in deciding on a tube, and letting me use one of the tubes he made!  The tag below is my "test", and Jimmy loved it, so I told him he had to help me think of a name for the tut and provide me with of of his "unseen" tubes to use!  He agreed without hesitation (hugs Jimmy)!  And actually I made another tag too, that makes this easier to read, so I am going to go this route, but both tags are displayed!

What you need:

  • A colorful tube

  • My lattice tube, (which has Dee's Brushed Gold BP Preset on it!) - YWN~Gold Lattice-06.zip

  • A font (somewhat fat in size, so it shows your color and your lattice overlay)

  • Blade Pro or Super Blade Pro (demo available):  Flaming Pear

  • Dee's Brushed Gold Preset - Download:  Dee's Brushed Gold BP Preset (and put in your "environments & setting folder inside your BP or SBP Plug-ins folder), check out Dee's Blade Pro Presets!

1.  Open a new transparent image in PSP (make it big enough for your name, we will resize later).  For this tut, I am using 600 x 300 (but if your name is long, use 800 x 400 at least!).  You need to allow enough room to use your fat fonts and then to decorate after.

2.  Open your tube.  I am using a Tube I made of one of my favorite artist's work.  In case ya don't have the artwork, I am showing it here for you to snag!  Be sure to check out the website, every piece is a masterpiece!  Yes, I am speaking of Kayomi, and the title of the painting is "Honeymoon"

If you want to use this tube, just click on the screen shot of the tube below to download the tube.

3.  Set your Foreground color to White and your Background color to NULL.  Your Materials Palette should look like this:

4.  Click on the Text Tool and then at the top of your toolbar select your text (I am using Gill Sans Ultra Bold).  Adjust your font size and change the Stroke width to 3.0.  The text toolbar should look something like this:

5.  Click on your blank image and enter your text in the text box.  Make any adjustments to the font or size as needed.  And click OK when done.  You have made an outline only using the text you have selected.  Keep your text selected. This is what mine looks like:

6.  Click EFFECTS > PLUGINS > FLAMING PEAR > BLADEPRO (or SUPER BLADEPRO).  Apply Dee's Brushed Gold Preset for Blade Pro (the filename is D_brushed gold.q9q).  I am using BladePro, so if you use Super BladePro, your screen will look slightly different.

7.  Click OK to apply the BladePro (or Super BladePro) preset.

8.  Click SELECTIONS > SELECT NONE.  Your text should now look something like this:

9.  Click on your Magic Ward Tool and then hold down your SHIFT key, and then click INSIDE each of your letters.  Once your are done, you will have the inside only of each letter selected.  It should look like this:

10.  Click on SELECTIONS > MODIFY > EXPAND.  A dialog box will appear.  Change the NUMBER OF PIXELS to 2.  The dialog box should look like this:

11.  Click on OK.  Do not deselect.

12.  Look closely at your text.  You will see that your "dancing ants" are now actually IN the gold outline you made.  Mine looks like this now:

13.  Click on LAYERS > NEW RASTER LAYER.  The Layer Dialog Box will appear.  You can change the name of the layer if you like (It should be Raster 2 as the default for this project).  I renamed this to Lattice, just so it is easier to tell what is what.  Here is a screen shot of the dialog box:

14. Click OK.  Do not deselect text.

15.  You now have 2 layers.  the 1st layer is named RASTER 1 and we just renamed the 2nd layer Lattice.  Your layer palette will look like this:

16.  Change your foreground to pattern and select the lattice tube.  Change the scale to 50.  Your material dialog box will look like this:

17.  Click OK.  Your Materials Palette now displays the lattice tube as the foreground.

18.  Make sure you have the layer named LATTICE selected.  Using your Flood Fill Tool , flood fill the inside of each letter of your name with your lattice tube.  It should look something like this now:

19.  Click on SELECTIONS > SELECT NONE.

20.  Click on LAYERS > ARRANGE > MOVE DOWN.  Your Lattice and Raster 1 layers have now switched places, and should look like this:

21.  Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE VISIBLE.  Your image should look something like this now:

22.  Now select your Dropper tool and select a complimentary color from your tube for your background color.  I would suggest a lighter color.  I am using color #DC898E, which for those that want to know what it looks like before you choose the same color, it looks like this:

23.  Click on LAYERS > NEW RASTER LAYER.  The Layer Dialog Box will appear.  You can change the name of the layer if you like (It should be Raster 1 as the default for this project).  I renamed this to colored text, just so it is easier to tell what is what.  Here is a screen shot of the dialog box:

24.  Click OK.

25.  You now have 2 layers.  the 1st layer is named merged and we just renamed the 2nd layer colored text.  Your layer palette will look like this:

26.  Click on your Materials Palette, and change your foreground to NULL (your background color is the color you just selected).  The Materials Palette now looks like this:

27.  Click on your text tool and enter the same text as you entered in step 5.  It should look something like this.  Don't worry, we will line it up later.  Mine (off-center as it is) looks like this:

28.  Lets go ahead and move the colored text layer so it is lined up.  To line it up properly I would suggest zooming in by 5.  To do this click on VIEW > ZOOM > ZOOM IN BY 5 STEPS.  Just use your Mover Tool and drag your colored text.  If it is lined up properly, your should be able to just see the gold edges around the edges of your name.  This is what mine looks like:

29.  Click on EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > INNER BEVEL, the Inner Bevel dialog box will appear.  Use the following settings.  If you like the effect, be sure to save the settings.

30.  Click on OK.

31.  Click on LAYERS > ARRANGE > MOVE DOWN.  Your colored text and Merged layers have now switched places, and should look like this:

32.  Select the layer named MERGED, which is your gold outline and lattice layer.  Click on EFFECTS > 3D EFFECTS > DROP SHADOW, the Drop Shadow dialog box will appear.  Use the following settings.  If you like the effect, be sure to save the settings.

33.  Click OK.  Your tag should look something like this right now:

34.  Click on LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE VISIBLE.

35.  Add your tube to your name tag and then Click LAYERS > MERGE > MERGE ALL (Flatten). Resize as necessary.  You are done!!  Mine looks great, and I hope yours does too!  I would love to see it!

If you decide to resize, don't forget to sharpen!!!

You are done!  I would love to see your results too!  Send them to me at:  Yourwebness Also, If ya need any help, e-mail me at that same link!  :)
